Xoops is a free Web content management system on the basis of PHP and MySQL and is subject the GPL.

The designation XOOPS stands for "“eXtensible Object Oriented portal system"”. With XOOPS complex web pages can be administered simply. Primary system offers a Framework with multi-user administration, scalable with modules. Design and layout can be adapted over the integrated Smarty Template engine or with already available Themes. Main area of application of XOOPS are on-line Communitys, by which high flexibility can fulfill however also the requirements to XOOPS to a classical content management system. Contrary to systems, like e.g. Joomla, XOOPS is optimized not directly for Web designers. XOOPS uses a powerful and well-known Template engine with those everything to be in principle adapted can, it exists however only few outstanding Themes for XOOPS. The conceptional Design and the implementation of the PHP classes lend however a very high flexibility and strength to XOOPS.

XOOPS can be extended by so-called modules by further functions as for example guest books, forums, Wikis and vielem to more. Since version 2.2 a very small selection on modules is however only provided. There modules for the versions 2.0.x however not to the current XOOPS versions are compellingly compatible become simple the actualization often not straight. For this reason, and, the project is guessed/advised the call of the current version as to be no longer stable as in former times in criticism. The developers again positioned themselves however lately and their strategy considered, so that the current version 2.2.3 approaches meanwhile the stability of old versions. The further process depends at present substantial on the development in particular with the modules and the CMS. Besides the Roadmap for the version 4 is already certain, which represents a new generation jump and is to implement very interesting features.
