Web kit is the name of a HTML Render library of the company Apple, who is available in Mac OS X since version 10.3. This consists of the components Web core (the library responsible for the HTML representation) and Javascript core (Javascript Parser).
The Web kit is the basis the KHTML library of the KDE project, however by Apple for the use in Mac OS X was particularly adapted. Apple puts advancements at the library to the KDE project at the disposal.
The Web kit could be already used in Mac OS X version 10.2, was there however part of Apple Browser safari and available only if this were installed. Since Mac OS X version 10.3 is it part of the system.
The most important uses of the Web kit are in Browsern such as safari, also some Browser use the Web kit of third offerers, like OmniWeb or Shiira. Beyond that the library is used for example also by of Apple auxiliary function and for the HTML representation in TextEdit.
