Web integration is a new method for the application and information integration. Modern software systems often offer a HTML interface to browser based operation. Web integration uses exactly this user interface for an automated interaction with application and represents to that extent an advancement of the traditionally above all terminal-oriented screen Scrapings (for host integration).

Principle

With the help of graphically oriented development tools an instruction sequence (e.g. load PAGE - > Submit form - is defined > loop Table - > Extract DATA), which automates an interaction accomplished typically by humans in the Browser.

In this way on the one hand data can be read by Web-based systems and interpreted (to further storage in data bases/files), on the other hand one are functions of existing Web applications easily in new context re-usable (e.g. by transformation into Web a service), even if actually no native API exists.

Efficient pattern recognition permits the durable integration also from dynamic Websites, with which the position of individual HTML tags changes e.g. by Personalisierung or advertising banners regularly.

Advantages

• Improved tuning between IT and specialized division. Processes on level of the user interface are comprehensible and visible. The same process on application logic layer (beginning for classical integration) is only programmers understandable, who the interfaces.

• Reduction of the complexity. With larger IT-projects many departments are often involved. This requires complex organizational co-ordination. Web integration is a not invasive integration method, which does not require adjustment of the original applications. Thus resources-intensive architecture changes and their influence on existing applications and infrastructures are avoided.

• Shorter courses of the project with decreased risk. Via browser oriented development tools integrations can take place in clearly shorter time with fewer development knowledge and beyond that iterative. Basis programmer driving and HTML knowledge are sufficient.

Demarcation

Web integration represents usually no complete replacement for traditional Enterprise Application integration. Rather it is supplementing used in many projects to be able to convert around individual requirements either at all or but at least in clearly reduced time with lower risk.
