User modes one names a set of attitudes, which a user for itself and/or its current connection to the IRC server can specify in the Internet Relay Chat. Except for few exceptions user modes are simple flags (switches), which switch on or off individual options.
Contrary to the Channelmodes, there are only few user modes uniform for all IRC nets. The following are mostly supported:
| User mode | Short description | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| +i | Invisibly | One is only visible for user, with which one is in at least a Channel. Others cannot see one over inquiries such as /who or /names of outside of a Channels to no more. |
| +s | Server Notices | One receives various auxiliary messages, which concern the status of the IRC server. |
| +w | Wallops | One receives so-called Wallop Messages, the IRC operator for open communication by means of /wallops to send away can. |
| +o | Operator | By the IRC server one sets automatically, if the user authentifiziert itself as IRC OI with the server. Easily, thus Authentifizierung, can be set this mode not. |
The user modes s and w are not no more supported however also in many nets already or are to a large extent ineffective. Dependent on the assigned server software however different modes are available. Examples of not original, but often occurring modes/meanings:
| User mode | Short description | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| +r | registered | It can be set only by IRC services/removed and marks that the user for its pitch name is identified. |
| +k | Kill Msgs | The user receives messages over it if other user from the net were removed or banished. |
| +x | Hostshading | The otherwise freely observable indication host and/or the IP address partially for others is given unrecognizable, in order to protect against direct attacks on the computer. |
Some IRC servers set automatically determined user modes with the connection establishment. Many automatically wished user modes let user set and/or remove from their IRC Client to connection establishment.
