A Tosser is a program for the administration of a Messagebase, usual in the FidoNet.
The Tosser receives files from the Mailer, in which in a certain format messages are contained. These are sorted if necessary unpacked and then into the individual ranges of the Messagebase ("tossen", "eintossen"). In addition received messages are left packed and laid out for all, which subscribed the respective message scope (are "locked").
Locally on the system if a message is written, then the Tosser must find these, exports, if necessary to pack and in suitable way to the dispatch transfer to the Mailer.
The Tosser provides in a predominant number of cases also for maintenance of the Messagebase, thus for the deletion to old Mail, Defragmentierung, often also for the automated initialization and deletion of message scopes.
Depending upon Mailer the Tosser worries exclusive about public message (FrontDoor) or also about the processing of NetMail (Binkley Style), which is often stored in different Messagebase formats.
The choice of the Tossers depends strongly on the choice of the Messagebase format, on the choice of the editor and the Mailers. Some Tosser supports different Mailer Outbound formats and different Messagebase formats.
