The European LIBRARY (TEL) is a Web portal, that the entrance to the existence (books, magazines electronic media), both in digital and in non-digital form, which 43 national libraries in Europe makes possible. It guided of the ICCU (central Katalogisierungsinstitut Italy) and the CENL (conference of the European national librarians). The portal exists since 2004.

Service

The TEL offers the free search in the catalogs and the partial liable to pay the costs execution reef on the electronic collections of the national libraries of the European ones union-central service and maintenance is subject to the team of the office at the royal library of the Netherlands. The portal is available in English, German and French language.

Members

There are two categories of the membership:

Full members

The national libraries of

Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Switzerland, Serbia, Slovenia

The OPACs of the full members is fully integrated in TEL.

Basis members

The remaining 28 European national libraries. Their collections and catalogs are integrated gradually in TEL.

History

The European LIBRARY followed from the three-year TEL project of the European union, which should examine to what extent a cross-linking and central accesses to all national libraries of the union is possible. The project was successfully locked on 31 January 2004. It was part-financed by the European Union. Into the new portal the current Web offer of the European national libraries GABRIEL (gateway and BRIdge ton of Europe's national Librarians) in the summer 2005 was integrated.
