Thawte Consulting is an enterprise with head office, specialized in Internet security, in Durbanville, South Africa. The enterprise was created 1995 by Marks of Shuttleworth. In addition Mark of Shuttleworth is owner of the company Canonical, the sponsor of Ubuntu. In the years 1999-2000 Thawte of Verisign was transferred. The main business field of Thawte is the assignment of digital certificates for different purposes as certification body so mentioned (English Certification Authority, APPROX.). Server certificates (SSL/TLS) for for example Web or E-Mail servers are issued. In addition, S/MIME Client certificates, with which one can sign enamels digitally.

The special at Thawte is that named-bound E-Mail certificates are free. Certifying the authenticity of the person takes place by a Web OF Trust.
