A terminal server is emulated a computer, several terminals (PC, screens and/or Desktops or command lines) and/or the software, which makes mentioned emulation possible. On each emulated terminal, as on a normal PC, several different programs can run. These emulated terminals are represented on the screens from usually distant (remote) PCs or Thin Clients. For terminal servers, which specialize only in the emulation of command lines, in the meantime the term server CONSOLE is common.

Advantages

  • The local job can be economical sees: Thin Client, because the actual processing of the data take place on the distant (remote) computer.

With the structure with many jobs (Clients) and a high performance central system are further advantages:

  • The TCO (total Cost OF Ownership) sinks with large installations substantially.
  • The software must be installed only once on the terminal server.
  • At the local PC systems no changes must be made.
  • Maintenance costs shift on the central system. A central change concerns each Client. However it applies to mark that there are also intelligent server Client concepts, which become likewise fair these requirements.

Disadvantages

  • Centralization. The more largely the plant group, the more largely the dependence/danger of a loss.
  • Dependence on a constantly existing network connection between Client and terminal servers.
  • The innovative beginning of a distributed system is not pursued. Decentralized network concepts offer a larger reliability.
  • It takes place a increased data exchange between the terminal server and the Thin Clients. Thus the performance of the network is noticeably loaded.
  • High hardware costs for a high performance terminal server, which must be arranged accordingly performant as central interface. All arithmetic performances are done centrally.

Examples

  • Ms Windows: Well-known TS-Server/Client environments is ms terminal server (S. remote Desktop Protocol) and Citrix Metaframe. The latter is around compression and administration-front-ends extended ms terminal server, particularly which aims with additional functions (e.g. load Balancing) at larger infrastructures. The terminal server technology for Microsoft Windows server was originally developed by Citrix and taken over then by Microsoft.
  • UNIX, GNU/Linux For local there are applications LTSP. If servers and terminals are connected by Internet, NX ONE of the Italian company is recommended NoMachine.
