Tcptraceroute is a trace route implementation of Michal C. gates, which works with TCP packages.

The trace route programs usual under Windows and Unix send against it ICMP echo or UDP packages. The problem thereby is that many rout and detailed UDP and ICMP packages block or reject Firewalls in the meantime, before the actual goal is reached. TCP packages to an open haven, about haven 80 on a Web server can not be blocked against it since them one for rout and to Firewalls "„legal "“communication represent.

Tcptraceroute considers load balancer, i.e. if several times sent packages of different host return, Tcptraceroute indicates this. Tcptraceroute offers further the option to recognize DNAT.

The results of Tcptraceroute are therefore often more meaningfully than the one "„conventional "“Traceroutes.

Tcptraceroute is available as Linux Sourcecode and Windows Binary, for many Linux distributions exists finished packages.

A program with similar function range is Layer4-Traceroute (LFT).
