System management server (SMS) is a software product of Microsoft.
By system management one generally understands the centralized administration of hard and software within an enterprise. System management forms a subset of the Clientmanagement
Momentarily the version SMS is present 2003 SP2.
The following tasks can be accomplished automated by SMS for a very large number of Clients:
On the terminal which can be administered (SMS Client) the SMS Client software runs in the background. This can be installed automated on the PCs, so that also during the introduction of SMS in the enterprise no manual action on the PCs is necessary.
For everyone of the above mentioned tasks it gives a so-called Client agent, to drawing up the inventory agent, remote control agent etc. the principle thus e.g. is that the agents work always independently on the Client and then servers put their results to the SMS at the disposal. The SMS server stores the results in the SMS data base and gives to the administrator over a status system detailed feedback over all procedures running off on the Client.
Here over WMI and further interfaces a large quantity of configuration parameters are selected and conveyed to the server. Both hardware configuration and installed software, operating system configuration etc. are determined. System files are taken an inventory with version number and file date.
The taken an inventory data can form then the basis for evaluations with the SMS reporting services. Likewise they form the database for the software distribution. For example a Office update can be distributed only to those Clients, which installed also Office.
It is the heart of each Client management solution. SMS educates quasi the postmen for software packages and ensures in such a way for the fact that arbitrary software on the Clients can be installed. SMS is only as good thereby as the package which can be installed. For installation problems rarely SMS the debt is to be given, to SMS implements in each case a command line on the Client. Over status messages, which are conveyed by the Client to the server, console can be pursued in the SMS Admin whether and with which status a package on a Client was installed.
Via a large number of parameters can the software distribution be steered. Packages can be installed with administrative rights and for the user completely transparency in the background, so that the work routine of the user is not interrupted.
Remote control is a Tool for the user Helpdesk, which makes possible it to lock themselves and the user assistance give on the PC of a user. Similar products of other manufacturers are e.g. PC Anywhere or VNC. For Windows XP Microsoft favors the remote Assistance integrated in XP, which is SMS remote control for compatibility reasons to Windows 2000 and still in SMS contain Windows NT.
The SMS data base contains a great many configuration parameters of all SMS Clients of the enterprise. A goal of the SMS reporting is it to prepare and make in the form of evaluations again these data available. SMS reporting needs an Internet information server (web server) and represents those of report in the form of ASP sides. Over hyper+on the left of within the report very simply further of report can be called, which makes the system very clear and user friendly. In the SMS standard are available a large number of report, own evaluations can be produced likewise.
Hereby the use of applications can be supervised. Over the SMS reporting is determined, which applications are started up like many jobs. Thereby the administrator is reminded in time of license excesses.
SMS is suitable for middle to very large enterprises of 50 to 50,000 jobs and more. Large enterprises are divided into several "SMS of locations", which form then a location hierarchy. This consists of over and subordinated locations. A superordinate location can see and administer all its subordinated locations. A untergeorneter location passes its data on also completely to its locations. Also very large environments can be administered by this system efficiently and central.
For the storage of all data SMS uses Microsoft the SQL server.
With the "SMS Admin CONSOLE" is served SMS. In addition SMS (over the so-called WBEM interface) can be administered completely over Skripten.
Frequently system management server is called Backdoor, which permits it to spy users and to bring arbitrary code on the Clients to the execution. (An example of such Tools is bakes Orifice.)
This applies to SMS only partially. By the software distribution component to the administrator the possibility is given to implement any software with administrative rights this is however naturally also the purpose of a software distribution. In order not to expose itself to the reproach of the espionage possibilities, Microsoft always builds to functions, which inform the user into SMS, if actions on its PC are implemented. Like that a remote control of the Clients without appropriate notification of the user is not possible. In the system control can be examined at any time, which components are installed by SMS and active, SMS does not hide itself thus in the background like the various hackers Tools.
Most work councils agree the use of the Desktop management of system SMS, which spicht also for the fact that danger of the injury of the is rather small.
It nevertheless is possible over license control to determine, which user uses which application like for a long time. This might be so some work council a thorn in the eye.
Competition products to SMS are among other things:
All programs stated above use Unicast technology, with exception of the LANDesk management Suite, which works with (patented) the Targeted multicast technology. Also DX-union Olympia and Tivoli support likewise alternatively multicast technology.
