Streaming server one calls a dedicated server for the distribution of Streaming Media data over a network.

Typical Streaming servers support special Streaming minutes such as RTP, RTCP and RSVP.

Offerer

To the offerers of Streaming servers among other things material networks (ehem. progressive networks) belong, Microsoft and Apple in addition, smaller offerers such as FlexCast. Also in the open SOURCE community Streaming servers are developed, for example in the projects Darwin, VideoLAN and Helix as well as in the Catra Streaming Platform.

The operation of a server for liveStreaming presupposes - beside the respective licenses - at least a dedicated server; Private customers can rent computers also before-configured with some Webhostern and ISPs.

History and development

The first commercial products for the Streaming publish progressive networks, later material networks, already 1994; the competitors Apple and Microsoft pulled tight a little later with QuickTime and Windows Media.

Apple in the middle of presented the first open SOURCE Streaming server 1999 with Darwin. The Darwin Streaming server is based on approved parts of the source code of the QuickTime Streaming of server.

Material 2002 pulled and released networks tight parts of the source code of the internal servers (Helix universal servers and Helix DNA server), Player, Produktionstools and codecs, which are portiert and developed further in the Helix DNA project (); the Helix DNA server supports the file formats MP3, material audio, material video, Windows Media and QuickTime.

The project uses two licenses, the material networks Public SOURCE License (RPSL) and the material networks Community SOURCE License (RCSL) (). First results were published with the release of the Helix DNA of server at the beginning of of 2003, the completion of the Helix DNA Encoders retarded however.

For simple Streaming within the SOHO range today no commercial server software is more necessary; the Streaming Player VLC Media Player contains all characteristics, which a home user needs. This contains meanwhile also functions, which go over needs from private people far outside, why VLC is also professionally used, for example with roofridge Mile TV.

Since the introduction of UMTS 2003 the Streaming moves on mobile terminals of always far into the focus of the Streaming technologies. Under the project 3GPP, a uniform standard, which makes compatible Streaming possible on mobile terminals, exists to the 3rd generation Partnership Project. Numerous projects, like with the Fraunhofer Institut FOCUS and GoVid, show the possibilities, which Streaming offers mobiles.
