A Softphone is a VoIP Client application software, which simulates a material telephone ("Hardphone") on a computer.
One usually communicates by means of a Headsets over the sound map of the computer.
Softphones are usually offered as part of VoIP services, whereby these differ usually much in supported minutes. Beside the open standards H.323 and SIP are strongly common also minutes (like e.g. Skype).
For the open standards are also free open SOURCE Softphones available, like for example Ekiga (Linux) and OpenWengo (Windows, Linux, Mac).
