SILC (English: Secure Internet live Conferencing) is similar network minutes/a Chatprotokoll to the IRC. It was sketched by Pekka Riikonen and published for the first time in the summer 2000.

A substantial difference to other Chatprotokollen consists of the fact that SILC offers safe communication over uncertain nets, since messages on the entire transmission path are coded (end end coding).

Function mode

A SILC net can be distributed (like an IRC net also) on several host/server. But despite the superficial similarity to IRC the internal structure is entirely different:

Contrary to SILC IRC minutes are not, there the reports as plain language on the entire transmission path (gesnifft) to become intercepted to be able.

Fully IRC servers SSL extensions use a hand, in order to code the data traffic between them and the Client, but nevertheless the server administrators can catch reports, read and whether the not confirmed sender identity unnoticed by others to change.

SILC remedies with end end coding on basis of asymmetrical Kryptografie. Thus several problems are at one blow solved:

  • The identity of the sender is clear, since for identification no more separate the pitch name the public key are used. The use of a strange or falsified public key does not have a sense, since one cannot decode received message then.
  • Due to the end end coding messages can be conveyed by a user on the other hand, without contents for the administrator the host are visible as plain language.
  • So-called Nickwars is void likewise, since Nicks are variable by the anderwertige one identification and even in the same channel several times can be used. With two Nicknames equal then simply the Domainnamen of the respective Provider attached around the difference for the users clearly perceptible to make.

In addition the special structure of SILC nets prevents so-called Net Splits, which can lead under IRC to complications.

A Whitepaper with specification of the function mode is to be found here (English).

The current specifications of SILC minutes are here and with the IETF available.
