Semantic MediaWiki is a semantic Wiki, which as extension to the MediaWiki software, which basis for Wikipedia is developed. This extension makes it possible to each user to make information for machines (programs) better accessible what makes it again simpler for humans, in the information to search or it further use.
Semantic MediaWiki offers two kinds, in order to make information more explicit a side:
As example Berlin could stand on the side that it is the capital of Germany. In Semantic MediaWiki can make for user the reference to Germany types (to type) and thus the relation (capital of and/or in the English capital OF) between Berlin and Germany explicit.
On the side Berlin would be the syntax the following: <nowiki>" [[capital OF:: Germany]]" </nowiki>Dies would result to Berlin in the semantic statement """capital of ""Germany ".
On the side Berlin could stand further: The city has 3393933 inhabitants. In the Semantic MediaWiki can make this information explicit for user, by it <nowiki>" The city has [[population: =3993933]] inhabitants" </nowiki> write. This would result in the semantic statement "Berlin ""has number of inhabitants ""3393933 ".
