Retrodigitalisierung or retrospective digitization one calls the digitization of similar publications (among other things printed media, films, tapes).
Retrodigitalisierung is used particularly in libraries and archives, in order to receive and for the broader use open by decay endangered works for future generations. Apart from the inventory maintenance also the world-wide accessible making of rare or particularly frequently used works can be a reason for the digitization. In this case supplementing gladly additionally an ocr recognition is accomplished, in order to facilitate the work with the texts on the computer and make new functions possible.
A well-known example is the digitized version of the good mountain Bible. The DFG promoted and promotes a set of projects to libraries, which make very different existence (Monografien, pictures, newspapers and magazines, encyclopedias etc.) scanable for in scanning and. Until recently a uniform entrance and thus the broad knowledge of these digitized versions were missing. In the meantime exists for it center the listing of digitizations of pressures.
The digitization from catalogs to the development of the existence registered therein is called Retrokonversion.
The Retrodigitalisierung is sometimes connected with archiving on Mikroformen, since these possess a substantially larger durability than digital storage media. For the long-term archiving of digitized media and electronic publications (e.g. net publications), suitable strategies must be considered, in order be represented the data and contents also in in the future used systems (hardware and software) still and be able to use.
Large Austrian Retrodigitalisierungs projects are Austrian Literature on-line one or archives of the worker newspaper.
Innovations within the range Retrodigitalisierung come particularly from America. Beside libraries and research establishments, which work on v.a. scientific literature, now also offerers begin such as Google and Amazon Retrodigitalisierung and offer their products partially liable to pay the costs. The project of Google Book search is for contentwise and political reasons very disputed, above all a politician Jean Noel Jeanneney, it leads the French national library, advances the controversy. The European Union has at the 3. May 2005 a resolution for an own project calm, whose conversion will cost still much money and energy. (Wording of this resolution: see Related links). The provisional work name of the project reads "The European LIBRARY" TEL, in German is "European digital library" at present (2005) usual. Jeanneney uses Numrique shortened BNE.
In official reaction to the European Union resolution the German government assigned the responsibility for the further course of the things to the German library, which belongs to its scope of responsibility. The explanation culminates in the central thesis "a digitized cultural heritage" to it will contribute, the cultural variety to make research and science of Europe visible also with Internet searches." A debate between the culture/science Ministers of the six countries, those in the thing the European Union wrote (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Hungary) becomes lively.
An institutional problem lies in the fact that the responsibility for the European libraries is not actually at the European Union, but at the Council of Europe, in which partially different countries are member, and which has its own bureaucracy, which works after other principles, with other budgets etc. The group covers 45 libraries in 43 member countries. 2006 are a chief of the German library, Elizabeth Niggemann, the chairman of the conference of European library (see left). The project TEL is present marked here as in the "starting phase", with at present 9 national libraries (at the end of of 2005), which in 2-3 years all TEL members to become to be supposed.
