One regionally Internet Registry (RIR) is one regionally with the administration and dispatching of Internet resources entrusted organization. The competence covers IP addresses (IPv4 and IPv6) as well as AS numbers.

at present there are world-wide 5 active RIRs:

  • IP (RIPE NCC)
  • American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN)
  • Asia Pacific network information Centre (APNIC)
  • Latin American and Caribbean internet address Registry (LACNIC)
  • African network information Centre (AfriNIC)

Everyone this RIRs keeps larger IP address ranges assigned from IANA. From this ranges are inferred blocks and local Internet is assigned Registries LIRs (usually Internet service Provider), which serve for their part the actual customer.

To coordinate by signing of a mutual agreement 2003 the NUMBERs resource Organization (NRO) based around common interests to true and co-operation. In coordination with ICANN the NRO functions within the ICANN structures as ASO (ADDRESS Supporting Organization).
