RIPE IP is one 1989 created multinational forum, itself in accordance with statute with coordinative and administrative tasks in the range of IP nets in Europe and adjacent regions (former Soviet states, the Near East to Iran) the befasst1. Working groups exist to DNS, Routing, Security and further topics. Major task however is the assignment of IP addresses and Autonomous System Numbers (see: BGP) With exception of the assignment of IP addresses and AS-numbers, these tasks of honorary members are implemented.

The administrative assignment of IP addresses and AS-numbers is settled since 1992 by a subsidiary organization with an established staff (approx. 100 coworkers), that in Amsterdam resident RIPE NCC (RIPE network Coordination Centre) .RIPE NCC is only one of five RIRs (regional Internet Registries) within the ASO (ADDRESS Supporting Organization). Four the others are:

  • ARIN (American Registry For Internet Numbers)
  • APNIC (Asia Pacific network information Centre)
  • LACNIC (Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry)
  • AfriNIC (African network information Centre)

Everyone this RIRs keeps larger IP address ranges assigned from IANA. The RIPE provided IPv4-Bereich covers at present ten /8-Netze (Class A nets). From this ranges are inferred blocks and local Internet is assigned Registries LIRs (usually Internet service Provider), which serve for their part the actual customer. RIPE lists LIRs on its Website all available arranged to countries. A private person, a company or an other organization, who need IP addresses, must turn to a LIR or become even RIPE member.

Apart from the assignment of address blocks RIPE is responsible also for the data base, which contains all IP address ranges assigned by RIPE NCC. Over the WHOIS service accessible over the RIPE Website everyone can determine, a certain address range is assigned to whom. To each address range information is supplied such as owners, partners as well as their postal addresses, E-Mail addresses and telephone numbers.
