Posting designates a report within newsgroup (Usenet) or a forum. Such reports can be signed with signatures so mentioned. (See in addition also: PGP) In the basic principle one can understand the procedure in such a way, as if one would write a E-Mail, which is at the same time accessible however to several users. One could compare that also with famous black boards. Someone sets a message and for everyone, which wants that gladly can this message read, and perhaps even to it answer.

In the Usenet Posting and articles are synonymous. A Posting or an article is developed there similar as a E-Mail, begins thus with a header, which is separated by a blank line from contents. Each header line begins the continuation lines with a standardized keyword, followed from colon, blank and parameters, whereby such an entry into several lines umbrochen be can, begins then also empty or tabulator characters. The whole article ends with two following each other points as only indications into Zeile.Die most important keywords means:

  • Message ID: a marking, which no other Usenet article carries (similarly as with E-Mail). Because one also so-called Followups (answers; Retorts) posts knows, stand here in the order (separated by eckicke clips) the numbers of all referring messages in the descending order of the Thread.
  • Subject: the line for reference text written by the author (exactly as with E-Mail).
  • Newsgroup: Name of the newsgroup, in which the article is to appear. With several newsgroup (Crossposting) these are separate by commas and without blanks.
  • From: E-Mail address and name of the author (exactly as with E-Mail, syntax resembles). Example: My name <meinname@meineemailadresse.de>; the term before the address is indicated thereby in a Browser, the remainder serves only to take up with a E-Mail software contact for the author. Likewise there is (spread meanwhile however less) the way of writing meinname@meineemailadresse.de (my name).
  • Reply ton: Actually the same like From, but here one has the possibility of registering an address deviating from to which answers are to be addressed by E-Mail.
  • Path: List of the new servers, which passed the Posting on, also! separated. Corresponds in for instance the many Received: - Headern in enamels. Of the sender only partly falsifyable, because each passing on new server registers itself there.
  • NNTP Posting host: Hostname or IP address of the computer, which fed the Posting into a new server. Of the sender usually not falsifyable, because usual new servers reject Postings with such an entry and instead insert this entry.
  • Organization: Possibly by an advertising slogan of the company one replaces, over which one has posted, but the own entry thereby priority.
  • X-NO-archives: yes thereby asks an article author not to take up the article to archives as for instance Google Groups or Deja news.
  • Followup ton: Newsgroup, in which answers are to be rerouted. A group is usual, in order to be able to continue the discussion at a place. A further valid value is poster, which points out that the discussion is to be continued by E-Mail to the author. It is considered as polite to refer in the text again to this headers so that nobody surveys, where an answer is sent.

Many it hides newsreader the header, if one reads a Posting, and does not make possible not to edit it directly if one writes a Posting, so that it becomes not at all visible for the user that the Postings contains headers. However all Postings generally contains headers. The main function of these headers is those that the servers can assign the message better. It is mostly defined that the headers for the user are actually uninterressant, but that does not have to be always really also the case.
