Outlook Express (Abk. OE, in Microsoft support Knowledge cousin also OLEXP) is a Mail Client and a newsreader of Microsoft, which is attached to the operating system Windows in the current versions and is used therefore also by many users. Despite the name similarity the program connected with the Internet Explorer is of the Groupware Outlook independent program.

Functions

The function range of Outlook Express is meant for the typical private employment. It does not have Groupware and Unified Messaging functions, ordered for it contrary to Outlook over News functions. It supports following minutes: Smtp, POP3, IMAP4 and NNTP, as well as HTTPmail (a variant to the access to the Freemail accounts of Lycos, Hotmail, which is based on WebDAV/HTTP).

Version history

Outlook Express appeared in October 1997 in the version 4 together with the Internet Explorer 4 for Windows and came out from Microsoft Internet Mail and news. At a time thus, in which the Browserkrieg raved violently. Both were contained in Windows 98.
