Operation, administration and maintenance or OAM serves the monitoring of the data communication with AT and broadband ISDN on bit and byte level.

The five levels are defined, their lower three levels F1, F2 and F3 itself on the physical layer and the transmission layer (over PDH or SDH), which upper two levels F4 and F5 refer to at layer.

  • F1 designates the lowest level between transmitters/receivers, where no change of the data takes place
  • F2 describes the level between two LT (LINE terminal)
  • F3 designates the entire transmission circuit
  • F4 represents the Virtual Path (VP) to level
  • F5 represents the Virtual Channel (VC) to level

OAM on AT of level

The following functions are defined on at layer (F4 and F5).

  • Management putrefies - AIS (alarm Indication signal) and RDI (remote Defect Indication) serve the notification of other nodes over errors, for example interruption of a line. CC (Continuity check) serves the permanent monitoring of a connection
  • Performance monitoring - measurement of cell loss
  • Activation/Deactivation - activation and deactivation of performance monitoring.

OAM functions can be implemented over the entire distance of a VPC or a VCCs (END-ton-end), in addition, over a stage (segment), as segments are defined.

For the distinction of the OAM cells of user cells on VP-level the VCCs 3 and 4 is used, on VC-level the values 4 and 5 in the PT-field of the cell header. The Payload of the OAM cells contains a qualifier as well as function specific fields of the function.
