Nutch is the attempt of the open SOURCE Community most meaning at present to develop a search machine.

The Nutch Community operates no own search machine, but understands themselves as a pure technology supplier.

The Nutch Community of Doug Cutting, a well-known head in the search machine world is stated. Under its line Excite 1997 could report the largest search machine index, at that time proud 50 million sides.

For the adviser of Nutch Doug Cutting could win prominent supporters, e.g. Tim O'Reilly and Mitch Kapor. Backers were among other things in Overture, today to a subsidiary company of Yahoo!.

Nutch is written in Java and falls back to the indexing system Lucene. Width of parts of the software are expandable by a Plugin system. Thus also Java beginners can contribute simply parts to the overall system, without having to understand this in all details.
