A newsreader (also Newsclient or NUA for news user agent) is a computer program for reading and writing from messages in newsgroup Usenet.
The newsreader programs must be installed usually first on the computer. Beside "genuine "new readers there is also Web interfaces to the Usenet as for instance Google Groups. The use of these services is not gladly seen by some readers, since often existing standards are not considered and they are abused gladly by Spammern.
The first newsreader (e.g. READ EMS) were zeilenorientiert.vnews from Kenneth Almquist was probably first sideoriented newsreader. Its operation was very against by READ EMS ajar, in addition, notes affected the program.
With rn of Larry barrier 1984 a further sideoriented newsreader saw the light of the world. rn a whole set of following newsreader inspired like e.g. trn from Wayne Davison, xrn from Rick Spickelmier or slrn from John E. Davis.

After a number of various developments with new readers Ron Newman wrote 1994 a document, which describes the minimum requirements to a newsreader. From this document later the Good Net Keeping became seals OF Approval. Meanwhile from it a form for test developed by means of whose various Clients can be examined for its "fitness".
