Newsgroup are virtual panels in the Internet, in which to a circumscribed range of topics text contributions (also messages, articles or Postings mentioned) are exchanged. If a user publishes an article in newsgroup, then this is sent to a new server. This can put and to other servers pass the article on then to its users at the disposal, which put him again to their users at the disposal.

World-wide different News systems exist for decades. The most well-known is thereby Usenet, which connects a multiplicity of new servers world-wide. Often newsgroup are distributed, or in Intranets are made available in addition, purely regionally. Frequently minutes NNTP are used.

Access to newsgroup is made by special computer programs, which one calls newsreader, or by means of Web interfaces such as Google Groups.

Newsgroup is marked by a name, which is hierarchical layout in the Usenet. In addition it possesses usually a short description, English (and strictly speaking technically) called day LINE, which can be indicated by many new readers. A longer description is in the optionally existing Charter.

An example:

Name: de.rec.sf.misc
Short description: Other within the range Speculative Fiction (Phantastik).
Charter: Topic of the group is everything in connection with _S_peculative _F_iction (Phantastik, in particular Science Fiction, Fantasy, fantastic horror), for which there is not already a more special group.

Sometimes in some nets such as FidoNet, Z-net or MausNet newsgroup are marked with other conceptualnesses. Also sometimes for this reason the acronym FORKS (group, AREA, board, echo, list, newsgroup) is thus used as the more general and politically more correct expression.
