The netiquette or Netikette (technical term from English net - ''' Net ''' z and etiquette - Et ''' ikette ''') is an important component of the net culture. It described originally behavior recommendations in the Usenet, however meanwhile for all ranges in data networks is used, in which humans communicate with one another. Although it is recognized of many power pack takers as meaningful, it does not have any legal relevance. Partial aspects are frequently controversially discussed. There is no uniform netiquette text, but a multiplicity of documents, which overlap contentwise.

Topics

A goal of the netiquette texts is the easement of communication between individual power pack takers. Different ranges of topics are begun to cut:

  • Interhuman. Intonation and contents should be appropriate opposite the target audience. Will only one person responded or a group, as well knows itself one already, etc. in particular should not communication complicated anyway by text by ambiguities or offenses be made more difficult.
  • Technology. The standards for the transmission of messages should darzubieten be kept, around it as much as possible readers in the form like it were originally intended. In addition for instance the correct declaration of the character set counts.
  • Legibility. So that messages can be as simply as possible consumed, they should meet certain customs. In addition belong correct Satzbau and orthography, large and lower case to be ensured correct quoting and an omitting of redundant information as also keeping a maximum line length of 78 indications (see RFC2822) around Quoting and/or platform-independent representation.
  • Security. Depending upon medium a message can be seen by persons, for whom contents are actually not intended. Accordingly one should not express any things, which are not intended for third.
  • Legal. Different laws exist to the right at written texts, which one should consider. Likewise it applies to keep copyright if one sends materials away third.

Forums, Usenet

The first and fundamental recommendation of the Usenet netiquette is: "„Forgetting it never that on the other side humans sit! "“

Individual recommendations of the Netikette are sometimes criticized, e.g. the demand after a material name, after which it applies in the German-language Usenet as impolite, under a wrong name (code name and/or alias) to posts. This rule turns out under bombardment, if due to the topic or the kind of the discussion anonymity is desirable or necessary.

The RFC 1855, the netiquette Guidelines, expresses itself clearly against Fullquotes and TOFU. Nevertheless there is the need of intensive quoting with some discussions, for example if the receiver circle is to be increased, without all can access the past process.

Caution when using Crosspostings is recommended. Multipostings are completely

Troll persons are called, who contributions posts, with which they want to recognizably only provoke, without making a real contribution to the discussion. The contributions are called Troll post office, Troll Posting or Troll likewise.

Persons, who dedicate themselves in the exaggerated measure voluntarily to control of the netiquette observance, are often called devaluing Netcops.
