Mozilla (also Mozilla Suite or Mozilla Application Suite; new name since Mozilla the development broke off: SeaMonkey) is a free program collection consisting of Webbrowser, E-Mail program and further tools, those from a group of developers over '' mozilla.org '' under the Mozilla Public License, which GNU general Public License (GPL) as well as the GNU Lesser general Public License (LGPL) is developed. Mozilla is based on that 1998 of the Netscape corporation approved source code of the Netscape Communicators; from this base of code Mozilla contains however no longer much. Mozillas (again-written) internal layout machine is called Gecko.
Originally the word Mozilla was only the internal name for the Netscape Webbrowser. For the exact origin of the name, which refers to the first popular Webbrowser Mosaic, there are several explanations. One means that he sits down from Mosaic Killa together, according to the other one from Mosaic and Godzilla. The official Netscape Maskottchen, a green lizard, and the dinosaur, which carries both for the name Mozilla, used with Mozilla, points to latter explanation; it is however conceivable and perhaps more probable that the Maskottchen was selected because of the name similarity by Mozilla with the well-known figure Godzilla. One of the two interpretations of the meaning of Mozilla is thus a Backronym.
Mozilla runs at present on many different operating systems (platforms). This is made possible by the fact that large parts are platform independent of Mozilla. The chief work with the Portierung is allotted to the Netscape portable run time, which define a general interface for e.g. file access and store management.
The program surface is written in the particularly developed, likewise platform-independent language XUL, which is based on XML. The elements of this surface are represented, similarly as web pages, by Gecko and not of the operating system. This has the advantage that a developer does not need knowledge of several operating systems for changes at the surface. XUL makes possible also to adapt or extend in simple way through Extensions so mentioned the Mozilla surface. XUL supports also Themes so mentioned, which are provided to the own taste on basis by Web standards such as document Object Model and Cascading Style Sheets and with those the appearance by Mozilla be adapted can. A disadvantage is however that a XUL based surface on older computers runs more slowly.
Mozilla is also able to apply Stylesheets to HTML and XML sides. In addition at present the standards CSS 1 to 3 become (CSS 1 completely, CSS 2 almost completely, CSS 3 partly) and XSLT supported. Besides there is a Pop UP blocker and the function of the Tabbed Browsing.
Experienced users is it possible, the appearance and the behavior of Mozilla by working on the configuration, in Mozilla Browsern attainable over the input of about: config in the address line to affect and the creation of a so-called user Stylesheets.
Beside the Browser contain Mozilla also a complete E-Mail program inclusive directory. One of the most important features is the adaptive Spam filters on basis of the Bayes' probability theory, contained since version 1.3. After a learning phase, in which the user enamel classifies Junk "as "Junk "and "not, the program exhibits very good hit rates. The Mail program supports as many as desired POP3 and IMAP p.o. boxes per user. It permits besides the creation of filter rules, by which enamels can be pre-sorted automatically into arbitrary files, and orders over a great many possibilities of adapting the program to the preferences of the user. Coding and mark of E-Mail are accomplished uncomplicatedly with the S/MIME standard transparency and for the user. With the help of the Extension Enigmail is possible coded E-Mail communication also via PGP. In addition subscribing of newsgroup and writing contributions for these are possible.
Contained also the program module is Composer for working on and providing from HTML sides; it makes the production possible of web pages according to the WYSIWYG principle, but also the direct treatment of the source code is possible.
Further the Mozilla Suite has a module named Chatzilla to the Chatten in IRC networks.
Mozilla offers some functions important for web page and Javascript developers to the error tracing in form of the integrated Web development Tools. In addition belong the Javascript console, which permits the direct input of Javascript commands, the Javascript debugger Venkman and the Tool Cathedral Inspector, which permits it to examine and analyze the tree-like structure from web pages to and possible errors in the structure to thus discover.
The Netscape Communicator version 6.x and 7.x are based on Mozilla code.
Since the code was often criticized of Mozilla as too large and unclearly, formed different projects, which based on Gecko a faster, slimmer and Browser which can be serviced more easy to create to want. These are among other things:
Mozilla 1,0 appeared on 5 June 2002. At present current, stable version 1.7.13 appeared on 22 April 2006.
The Mozilla Roadmap plans that itself the project more concentrated on individual products and the Suite only in the stable branch 1,7 with safety updates supplied, from which later Milestones against it publishes no more final, official versions, developers however assistance gives, if they want to bring own versions out of the Suite on basis of the Mozilla code. The Mozilla project wants to concentrate completely on the advancement of Mozilla Firefox (Browser), from Mozilla Thunderbird (E-Mail program) and since short also Mozilla Sunbird (calendar/date administration). The advancement of the editor (Composer) as single's application Nvu takes place at present as external project. The principal reason for this change is that the acceptance of single applications is higher with the users than a complete Applikationssuite.
In the meantime some former Mozilla developers together-found themselves, in order to develop the Mozilla Suite further and to lead so the program under the name SeaMonkey in form of a Internet Suite further. After the Mozilla Foundation had registered the name SeaMonkey as trademark, the official announcement of the project took place on 2 July 2005. On 30 January 2006 the first and at present current stable version appeared 1.0.
