Mozilla Thunderbird [] is an open SOURCE E-Mail program and a newsreader of the Mozilla Foundation.
The program be based on the source text of the Mozilla Suite and is among other things available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris and OS/2.
The program uses an adaptive Spam filter on basis of the bayesschen filter, whereby after a short learning phase the hit rate is already very high and usually continues to rise with continuing use.
Mozilla Thunderbird supports safety components like electronic signature, message coding and certificates.
In addition an GnuPG/PGP extension with the name Enigmail for the program is available, with which one can code and digitally mark enamels also with PGP keys. GnuPG is particularly common under the Linux users and open SOURCE trailers far and is contained with most Linux distributions in the standard installation.
For the HTML representation of the enamels, three modes are to the user at the disposal. With first the original expenditure for HTML is indicated. The second mode limits the expenditure for HTML only to all all this, all potenziell dangerous HTML elements is filtered. And the latter completely switches HTML off, i.e. only pure text is indicated to the respective message. Thunderbird is adjusted according to standard to the first representation mode - original expenditure for HTML.
Virtual files show all messages, which correspond to defined search criteria before (similarly "the labels "of Gmail). In order to get e.g. all messages of a certain sender from all files indicated, one provides uniquely a search of all messages of this sender - this search can be stored then as virtual files. The messages always remain contrary to filters at their original place. Nevertheless one can open now this virtual file at any time, and all appropriate messages are indicated immediately, although these actually lie in different files.
Mozilla Thunderbird supports the separate administration of several POP3 and IMAP accounts. Alternatively all POP3-Konten can be summarized in a global Inbox. Also several directories can be led.
The user surface of Thunderbird can be adapted with Themes to the own needs. An integrated RSS Lesewerkzeug is available. By Quick search are to more possibilities at the disposal to find from the main window certain enamels.
By extensions, so mentioned extensions, further functionality can be added. Under many Themes and extensions are offered.
Mozilla Thunderbird is delivered due to license-legal problems without the German spell verification. This can be downloaded however separately under.
At present current version 1.5.0.4 appeared on 1 June 2006. It offers only stabilities and safety changes. Larger changes like automatic updates, improved support for RSS and Podcasting Spam control and an improved productivity, so e.g. "Immediately spell verification ", "automatic storing as draft "when writing new messages and the deletion of appendices from enamels with the version 1.5.0 were introduced. The version 1.5 is the first version since the version 1.0, which contains new features. The versions 1.0.2, 1.0.6 and 1.0.7 are limited to it, excluding program errors, which concern security, to eliminate stability and functions. The version numbers 1.0.1, 1.0.3 and 1.0.4 were not assigned for synchronous numbering with Firefox. Because of an error in the extension interface, which to it that some extensions did not function as for example to Enigmail any longer, was the version 1.0.5 of both programs led not in other languages released, but directly by version 1.0.6 replaced.
Mozilla Thunderbird enclosure already all functions for the E-Mail and message reception of the standard e Mail Client provided since Microsoft Windows 95 "Outlook Express "and is on the best way to become an alternative to the commercial competition program Microsoft Outlook which represents to today the quasi-standard in the division. Thunderbird is considered because of the open source text also as relatively safe. The learning Junkmail function achieves fast a high reliability.
In relation to the Microsoft counterpart is to be counted with Thunderbird on a smaller interface support to external hardware, approximately with the synchronisation on the telephone or PDA. Besides naturally no Office functionalities are available like the application-spreading spell verification. One - compared to Microsoft products achievement-weaker - spell verification is contained in Thunderbird. The large strength of Mozilla Thunderbird are the numerous extensions with the possibility for a user-oriented adjustment. Unfavorable it is here however that some basic functions are possible over extensions only; thus no different columns can post office entrance" for the list opinion of the files "and "sent" be furnished - which "sender" - column is located in the "post office entrance" - file usually behind the "dates" - column, during in "sent" - file the "receivers" - column to stand there should. File-specific columns can be reached only by means of a complex extension which can be installed multi-level ("Mnenhy") quasi as side effect.
Some regard the basis package by Thunderbird as "slim ", it occupied however much main memory and are comparatively slow. Therefore it is only conditionally suited for older computers. The original goal, from which ""Mozilla Suite grease two separate programs with substantially smaller resources consumption to separate (Firefox as Webbrowser and are not Thunderbird than E-Mail program), so far yet reached.
Only in the initial phase the supply of a calendar stands. For this Mozilla Calendar is meant, which can be used also by Mozilla Firefox. The developers describe it still as "present in the development phase "and recommend to use it only for test purposes. Parallel to it the project group Mozilla Lightning concerns itself with the possibilities of integrating an improved calendar function in Thunderbird.
