Camino is a Mozilla based Webbrowser for Mac OS X. the otherwise common XUL interface, which is used both into the Mozilla Application Suite and into Firefox, with Camino by a native Cocoa interface was replaced. Camino is, like Firefox, excluding a Browser. Components such as Mail or Composer from the Application Suite are not contained.

After long beta phase of Camino the final version 1.0 was officially released on 14 February 2006. The current stable version is published 1.0.1, to 2. May 2006.

Worth knowing

The Browser was before times well-known under the name Chimera, became however at the 3. March 2003 due to law cases renamed.

Because of its roots in the Greek mythology Chimera was a popular name choice for hypermediale systems. Apart from a system, which had developed the UCI under this name, Chimera was also the name one the first graphic Webbrowser at all.

With the choice of the name Camino one oriented oneself, as with Mozillas other project name, at old American cars. Firebird and Sunbird go back in models of the mark Pontiac, Thunderbird are a model Ford engine company, which were again presented 2004. Camino therefore developed following the El Camino of Chevrolet. Camino is called on Spanish both "“way"” and"” (I) goes ".

Functions and characteristics

Camino uses, just like Firefox or Mozilla, the Gecko Rendering engine, a program-spreading module for the representation from HTML sides and the XML based specification language XUL (however not to the organization of the graphic user surface).

Camino supports many system techniques of Mac OS X, as for instance the key federation, Bonjour, Spotlight or the directory contrary to Firefox also.

Many characteristics by Firefox are to be found also in Camino again, for instance of the Pop UP blockers, Tabbed Browsing or the Google Suchleiste.Des further contain Camino a blocker for advertising banners and a Downloadmanager.
