MOTD is a term from the Internet scene and stands for Message OF the Day, to German: "„Report of the daily "“or "„message of the daily "“.

This is a message, which is usually indicated to the user on servers as the first. So e.g. often in the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or on play servers.

Also in exchange stock exchanges for files like e.g. oDC or DC++ is a MOTD the rule.

Under Linux and Unix systems the MOTD message is usually in the file /etc/motd stored. Contents of this file, are indicated after the successful Login of a user, are direct it at the console or also by SSH from the distance.

Mainly the MOTD is used in order to refer to on fundamental rules and/or guidelines of the server. Often there also directly warnings are expressed or given referring to current events.

Thus often Downtimes for example planned (occasional server disconnections) is published over the MOTD, in order to grant to the users of the system the possibility, itself on the coming of stopping reduced availability of the system.
