Microsoft Internet information services (IIS) (often falsely Internet information server) the name for certain functions is to the publication of documents and files in the Internet and Intranet, which are made available by Microsoft Windows servers.
The Internet functions are Web server, FTP, SMTP, POP3, WebDAV and index services.
The server platforms, which make IIS services available, are Windows NT server, Windows of 2000 servers and Microsoft Windows servers 2003. The current version is IIS 6.0.
With Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional are provided reduced IIS services in the version 5.0 and/or 5.1 as optional component. Here the number of simultaneous connections is limited to at the most 10 and it can only a Website (the "Standartwebsite") be furnished. Also cannot server extension such as object libraries be merged every now and then (Server.CreateObject ("x.y") produces an error). The employment is intended as pure test and development environment, the restrictions prevents the sinvollen employment as live-Web servers.
IIS is not offered as independent product, in order to install it for example on Windows XP, although it lasts technically feasiblly. Of Microsoft product and Lizenspolitik upgrade of the operating system forces to, if one liked to use IIS in the full function range. In contrast to it for example Apache can be used also under Windows XP Professional in the productive employment.
The IIS can implement Active servers Pages or.NET applications (ASP.NET) or operate also PHP and JSP based Websites.
Further one can furnish secured web pages with IIS 5,0 and/or 6,0 SSL.
