The term scale of the medium quality (SMQ) or English Mean Opinion Score (MOS) designates a procedure for the subjective evaluation of the quality of speaking and picture transmissions in telecommunications. The Mean Opinion Score is the result of a fixed operational sequence of several tests, with which the felt quality of the language and/or the pictures is judged by a group by test subjects. The result of the test row is arranged in a five-stage quality scale.

With the MOS the quality of different language coding (codecs) or picture compression algorithms can be compared with one another.
The Mean Opinion Score is specified of the ITU-T in the recommendation P.800.
