The MausNet is a German-language not-commercial mailbox net.

History

MOUSE is a mailbox program developed in (Westphalia), which by telecommunications-interested Apple ii-users one conceived and one developed. The idea developed with a meeting in the summer 1983. To the initiators soft ELT, belonged to Gereon Steffens, dock Henningsen and other one place from.

The first mouse mailbox went then 1985 into into enterprise, the oldest log file comes from 30 April of the yearly, this date is generally considered as birthday of the MOUSE. MOUSE was at the time the abbreviation for of Apple user service. The software of the MOUSE was written and on Apple II compatible basis a 108-Rechner was operated in turbo Pascal. The software was portiert later on IBM-compatible PCs, after the original mailbox computer had given its spirit up.

1987 developed for mouse mailboxes in Munich and Aachen. The boxes exchanged at the time already data, were not interlaced e.g. however yet in the actual sense (a dedicated Routing and such a thing were missing). Actual network functionality, and thus the birth of the MausNet, were only added 1988 with the implementation of the MausNet format.

At this time it also necessarily became to differentiate between the individual mouse mailboxes logically from each other. The boxes received as names the Kfz characteristic district (e.g. "„MOUSE OF "“); if more than one box was in the district, these were sequentially nummeriert ("„MOUSE OF2 "“). A curiosity formed the "“MOUSE OTR"” - which stands for contractions for "“on The Road"” and a mobile designates mouse mailbox, which is used on fairs and meetings temporarly, nevertheless however in the regular interaction and line operation is merged. Traditionally the "“MOUSE OTR"” was used for example on the Hobbytronic fair into Stuttgart.

During the addressing one oriented oneself at the Domain addressing usual in the Internet ("„User@Adresse "“), whereby there were some specific characteristics (see below). Very early gateways in the FidoNet, Z-net and Usenet were already operated. 1991 belonged the MausNet to the joint founders individually to network of the registered association, an association, which should make private people available payable entrance in Internet.

On the high point of its spreading the MausNet counted approximately 120 boxes in Germany, it gave besides some mailboxes in Austria and in Switzerland. Like in addition, all mailbox nets the MausNet lost users starting from center of the 1990er increasingly in Internet. To end of 2004 still approx. 40 mouse mailboxes in Germany existed. One of these mouse mailboxes is also by telnet in the Internet attainable - telnet://du3.ohse.de.

Software

On mailbox side there are only two programs, which are used for the enterprise of a box in the MausNet: (Original) the mouse software for PC-compatible computers as well as the QUARK, which were written originally on Atari ST computers in GFA basic. The quark software was written later in C again and runs among other things under Linux.

On Client side, in the mouse jargon mouse exchange program or front-end mentioned, gives it numerous programs for each taste and for numerous operating systems, e.g. Cat and Okami (Atari ST), min ever (DOS), CROSS POINT (DOS, Windows, Linux), Mausefalle (often in combination with Hans does not go to to the post office) (Mac), Jerry (OS/2), Mickey and Einstein (Windows) as well as O4X ("“Okami for X11"”, Unix/Linux).

With the development of the mouse software special value was put on user friendliness. In addition belongs also the full support of umlauts, which are correctly represented under the most diverse usual Betriebssystemem. Umlauts and blanks can be used even in user names, e.g. "„Harald "“, whereby one can write this user down for reasons of the also as "„Harald_Mueller@HG "“.

A further feature, which was implemented in the MausNet already early, is the constant comment and/or message concatenation, i.e. in messages (both private and public), which and answer is sent away, automatically a reference on the answered message one inserts. The mouse software thus always is able to represent a message in their connection with other messages than Thread. Even "„modern "“commercial on-line forums do not offer today always this functionality.

Characteristics of the MausNet

Special popularity attained the MausNet at the beginning of the 1990er in the Atari scene. Nearly all Atari users, who had rank and name in the German Atari scene, were represented in MausNet. The support mailbox of Atari Germany was operated also with the mouse software (MOUSE MTK in Schwalbach at the Taunus).

In the MausNet material name obligation prevails. Aliases, how they anzufinden in on-line forums usually are, are there absolutely unwanted.

The running time of a private or public message in the MausNet amounted to always only few hours, at the latest on the next day was set it. For a private mailbox net which is based on switched lines this is a respectable value. To the comparison: Center of the 1990er were Netmails (private messages in the Fido) pretty often several days on the way.

In the MausNet applies the PM-communist manifesto, which is to guarantee the privacy of private reports (PMs). A mouse Sysop does not have a possibility of arriving with the mailbox software at the Mails in the personal p.o. box mouse users.

Since the establishment individually network of the registered association all mouse mailboxes can be attained also by Internet E-Mail. The Domain of the MausNet is "„maus.de "“, a mouse user reaches one by that thus e.g. adds this Domain to its mouse address. "„florian_baumann@hg.maus.de "“. Also in Usenet exported, they will become there under the hierarchy maus.* led many groups of mice.
