The Mailer is a program for automated dispatching and receiving from messages and other files, usual in the FidoNet.

The Mailer waits most time for a call - it is by modem, by ISDN, or via Internet (telnet or binkp). If he gets a call, he informs himself with its receiving station assistance of a handshake protocol (mainly EMSI, but older formats such as YooHoo or FTS-001 are often supported). The receiving station identifies itself on the basis its FidoNet addresses and if necessary negotiated passwords. There are no password error and no doubts about the identity of the call (if necessary alignment with Nodeliste or CallerID), then a session is opened. Both Mailer check now whether for their receiving station files ready-lie and dispatches this assistance of suitable minutes. On switched lines zmodem, is used Hydra or Janus whereby latter both have the advantage that files will transfer at the same time into both directions can, why one calls them also bi-directional minutes. Some Hydra and zmodem implementations permit also a Chat of the system operators with one another, while the data communication takes place.

If all data are transferred, the session is presented terminated, the line, and the dispatched files are deleted by the system. Received files are handed over to Tosser, Filetosser, tracker etc. to other programs, v.a.

The function and the field of application of May-learn can differently fail. Like that e.g. pure Mailer is to nothing different one than the Prozedere described above able. Others again worry independently about the administration of NetMail (private closed message), even offer an editor for Netmail, a terminal program and a Routing Prozedere.

Some Mailer must be arranged even externally to call another system others offers a sophisticated Eventmanagement.

In particular the Routing of NetMail in the FidoNet is a very much complicated and often affair also misleading due to the different kinds it to handle. Routing can happen dynamically and statically, bottom UP and top down, and dependent on time and entries in the Nodeliste.
