Mail loop is one from the English taken name for a loop (English: loop), in which a E-Mail is passed on endlessly (continuous loop).

Mail loops arise for example, if two E-Mail addresses are passed on one on the other.

Example: anton@beisp.iel --pass on up--> berta@beisp.iel berta@beisp.iel --pass on up--> anton@beisp.iel

If a E-Mail is sent on now anton@beisp.iel or berta@beisp.iel, a Mail loop develops, in which the E-Mail and is not sent endlessly between the two addresses - if further measures do not prevent this.

Such Mail loops are not in two addresses limited to separate can theoretically over as many as desired forwardings extend. Mail loops are particularly problematic, if one of the addresses involved is passed on to a mailing list or a Mail distributor.

Recognition of Mail loops

Usually Mail loops show themselves by E-Mail traffic (volume and number) or unusually high extent of utilization of a Mail server risen remarkably. If a Mail distributor is contained in the Mail loop, the receivers not taken part in loop notice the problem i.d.R. quite fast at very many, same enamels arriving in short time intervals.

Counter measures

Most Mailserver has means, with which Mail loops can be recognized and interrupted. Thus i.d.R. a E-Mail is not passed on, if it were before already passed on over a certain number of Mailservern (recognizably from the Received Headern) or if the receiving Mailserver recognizes that it set this Mail already before to the same receiver.

The fact that it comes nevertheless to Mail loops, which are not interrupted automatically, is not particularly at software, those the danger considered by Mail loops or because of insufficient configuration. Concerned often are Autoresponder, which set a message (e.g. absence for the sender wg. Vacation), although the received message is already a Autoreply (then two car Responder converse) or mailing lists, with which Received headers are removed automatically and so an automatic loop recognition (s.o.) to make impossible.
