Macromedia Flex is a presentation server of the company Macromedia, who was published in March 2004. This compiles at run-time the Flexbeschreibungssprache MXML and ActionScript 2,0 to Flash applications.
The goal of Flex is it to develop in simplest way Rich Internet Applications (also well-known as RIAs). In the multilevel architecture model of a RIA Flex applications represent the presentation layer. Naturally this was already realizable before the publication of Flex with Macromedia Flash MX 2004, but many developers looked more away, Flash nevertheless always than tool for Web designers and commercial artists were seen and not for pure developers.
Macromedia tries now to establish Flex as a platform in which more complex Flash functions are already provided in a class library, so that the developer can concentrate on the actual program logic and use nevertheless the advantages of Flash. For this the XML based specification language MXML is used.
Flex comes therefore with different components and characteristics, which make e.g. functions simple like the zoom or a fading in of pictures and other user interactions such as Web services, remote Objects, dragee & drop, sortable tables, graphs and Charts, inserted animations and effects.
The work river and the reaction of a RIA to user inquiries by unique downloading of entire application and the execution this is increased on the Client significantly opposite HTML-based applications such as JSP or PHP. So contents do not only have to be sent back to the server e.g. during the data validating in an input mask, before she is validated there and sent back at the Client. On the other hand it can come with larger applications to the fact that the processor load on the Client closes up strongly, since now not only the representation of the components, but also the logic find on the Clientseite.
A further advantage of Flex is the clean separation of the UI-Design (front-end) of the Backend. So can Flex into existing J2EE-Umgebungen be integrated cleanly.
Clear disadvantage is the high price for the presentation server. Because a Flex server costs momentarily around the 15,000 USD per CCU. An alternative to Flex is the open SOURCE project OpenLaszlo.
Also it is to be developed a challenge a CMS based application, there the Flash Player it so easily does not permit files to high-load. This function is only possible with the Flashplayer in the version 8 and was possible before only in combination with a middleware such as PHP.
The Flex Builder 1,5 was based on Dreamweaver MX 2004. The new version Flex Builder 2 will be based on Eclipse 3,1. In addition it is not to be let compile in the version 2 any longer necessarily the Flex uses of a server. This knows now the integrated development environment
