The local Mail transfer Protocol (LMTP) is a derivative of smtp minutes. While smtp for the Mail feed between servers was developed and appropriate requirements to the software places, LMTP is a variant, which is meant for the final feed.

The differences to smtp

  • Contrary to smtp LMTP servers do not need an own queue, if the feed cannot take place directly, reject the server the Mail temporarly.
  • In order to avoid that a Smtp Client with a LMTP server one communicates instead of the smtp-typical HELO and/or EHLO handshake LHLO used.
  • If there were no successful RCPT command in the current session, the server must return the delivery the error code 503 as answer to DATA.
  • After the locking "“."” DATA the command must the server a status message per accepted RCPT command send. The sequence of the Clients must be observed.

Example from view of the Clients

< 220 server.tld LMTP server ready > LHLO client.tld < 250-server.tld < 250-PIPELINING < 250 SIZE > MAIL FROM: <USER@EXAMPLE.TLD> < 250 OK ONE > RCPT TON: <WIKI@WIKIPEDIA.ORG> < 250 OK ONE > RCPT TON: <sales@wikipedia.org> < 550 NO look for user here > RCPT TON: <admin@wikipedia.org> < 250 OK ONE > DATA < 354 start mail inputs; end with <CRLF>.<CRLF> > to Client sends message >. < 250 OK ONE < 452 <admin@wikipedia.org> is temporarily more over quota > QUIT < 221 server.tld closing connection
