JUNET (Japan University network) was similar a computer network work established in Japan to research purposes to the Usenet.
The systems were connected by a telephone circuit, over which a UUCP implementation exchanged enamels and newsgroup contributions.
1984 were furnished between the University of Tokyo, the Keio university and the Tokyo of institutes OF Technology a data network connection. Later a multiplicity of universities and research institutes from the economy was attached to the system, so that in the end over 600 different institutions in it were involved. 1991 were created by the participants in the JUNET the JUNET federation.
By the WIDE project and the first commercial Internetprovider IIJ and Japan Telecom spread at the beginning of the 90's TCP/IP-based Internet in Japan. At the time of its ten-year existence in March 1994 therefore as overhauls outstanding JUNET switched off.
When Domainname became with the E-Mail addresses in the JUNET at first .junet used, e.g. Tokyo u-tokyo.junet, soon thereafter became this however on the.jp Domain changed for the university.
