The Java Anon Proxy (JAP) is a Anonymizer, that in the context of the project AN.ON of the technical University of Dresden, the University of Regensburg and the independent national center for data security Schleswig-Holstein was developed. It is freely available. There are versions for the operating systems Microsoft Windows (NT, 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP), Mac OS (Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X), OS/2 and Unix/Linux.
Since Java is used as programming language, JAP can be operated platform-independently, thus with different combinations of computers and operating systems (platforms). Beside the JAP software, which runs on the Client computers, by the project partners (and in the meantime also third) also mix servers are developed and operated. The JAP Client serves thereby as Proxy on the local computer and develops a coded connection to a mix server, which mixes the inquiries of the Browsers then over further (so-called mix cascade) to the actual server supplies and whose answer on same way back supplies. The inquired server cannot determine so the identity of the Clients. Since the packets are coded and scrambled between individual mixing both, the communication relation can be only uncovered, if everything mixes the cascade cooperates.
The present (in the middle of 2005) version of the software does not offer yet security aimed at in the long run, since yet all specifications for the communication protocol were not converted between mixing, protects however nevertheless already from local monitoring of the Internet data traffic of the JAP of using Internet Surfers, for example the a choice entrance of the used Internet Providers. In the meantime there are also mix cascades, in which mix the chaos computer club are involved and thus are not subject to the direct control of the project partners.
In the meantime the project partners were forced by a provisional order to build a logging function for certain web pages into the mix software. The operators had on the one hand a secrecy of a current procedure are sufficient to do, on the other hand one they built the monitoring function into the open SOURCE project. The unjustified demand of the punishing pursuers referred concretely by means of the provisional order to a web page with child pornography. This function however again deactivated after the JAP operators before court against the prosecution authorities intersperse itself could. Besides the software used by JAP is open SOURCE software, so that the function mode can be controlled by everyone and the installation of the TRACK function was noticeable quite fast. Altogether during the period, in which the logging was active, a data record was noted by Internet data traffic.
The promotion for the project will run out in the year 2006. Therefore there is probably the possibility starting from the center of the yearly of paying for the service. In particular it is planned that those make a contribution, which cause a high portion of the costs.
The designation Java Anon Proxy may not be used thereby due to cannons of the name part of Java the project no more, why one does not find this explaining advertisement of the acronym JAP on the web pages any longer.
