Freshmeat is, according to own data, the largest index of the Internets at software for Unix and derivatives, as well as Handhelds. This is commentated, cared for, updated and extended by a on-line Community.

About 56 per cent (conditions: January 2006) of this software is subject the GNU to general Public License. The index is not limited however to certain licenses, so that also programs with public domain, other open SOURCE, Freeware, Shareware and Payware licenses are represented. Condition is however that the offered software is platform independent.

After a registration on the homepage is it possible itself passive, by means of daily new type character to let inform about the program updates or also actively, by means of IRC Chat or directly on the side to discuss and commentate the programs.

The total number of the indexed projects amounts at present to over 39.000 as well as so far almost 181,000 published programs. (Conditions: January 2006)
