freedb a free data base with information about contents of CDs is, in particular music CDs. These information is in the Internet at the disposal and makes possible among other things when playing music CD to indicate the title to that CD as well as the individual pieces. A comparable project is MusicBrainz.

Basis for identification CD is the disk ID, which is computed in a certain procedure from the table of contents (TOC, "„Table OF CONTENTS "“) that CD. Thereby from the starting sectors and lengths of the individual TRACKs a kind check total is essentially formed.

With the disk ID as keys different are information-put down in the data base:

• Title/interpreter
• Year
• Category, possible values:
  • blues
  • classical
  • country
  • DATA
  • folk
  • jazz
  • newage
  • reggae
  • skirt
  • sound TRACK
  • misc
• Data to the individual TRACKs:
  • Title/interpreter
  • Length
• Additional information

The information is added from Freiwilligen to the data base and under the GPL licensed. The input effected by CD players and/or CD grave Berne (programs for CD ribs) freedb support. With ribs of CDs can be provided then automatically by inquiry of the freedb data base the ID3-Tags of the produced audio files.

Forerunner of freedb was sketched to CDDB, 1996 of Ti Kan with the cddbd server software of Steve Scherf.

The company CDDB, Inc. and/or since 2000 Gracenote changed and to an extended, but data format changed however the license conditions over for 2001.
