FORKS is an acronym for group of AREA board echo lists net. All these terms designate public discussion ranges in the terminology of different German-language mailbox nets. Since in some nets to the correct designations one paid attention embarrassingly exactly, the technical term FORKS (the majority GABELNs, sometimes also FORKS reads) developed.

Creator

Actual creator of the term is Patrick Schaaf in <381g5a$m6@midget.saar.de>. It wrote the term publicized out as "„group AREA board echo list net "“in the newsgroup de.talk.biz arre probably on 24 October 1994. The Posting is not available with Google Groups, but by Tobias walter on the same day quoted. Usenet Posting of Tobias walter, [news:de.talk.bizarre], 24 October 1994, <14352842@p33.mil.ka.sub.org> the term was then shortened to FORKS. Kristian designates shortly thereafter Patrick Schaaf under its alias BOF as a creator of the Begriffes.Usenet Posting of Kristian , [news:de.comm.gateways], 30 October 1994, <5Zs-n_GZnrB@black.schulung.netuse.de>

Background

It is noticeable that FORKS newsgroup does not contain the term, although the creation in exactly such took place. Possible background is the then frequent opinion, which is Usenet with its newsgroup the mailbox nets both technically as well as contentwise consider. Many mailbox nets were connected by so-called gateways with the Usenet, but were the relationship rather as strained to be designated, what closes also in frequent demands as "“the gates!"” manifested.

Patrick Schaaf, a gateway operator in the MausNet, created FORKS however rather as joke over the pervasive, forced appearing "„political correctness "“. Its actual use is thus rather inappropriate, if one of the more special terms (for example newsgroup) is applicable. As comprehensive term however large spreading and acceptance possessed FORKS.

Dissolution of the acronym

Mailbox nets can be assigned to not all terms. Frequently it concerned small Untergruppierungen with own word creations, whose details background to be hardly still investigated are.

The individual letters of "„FORKS "“stand for:

  • Group - MausNet
  • AREA - different
  • Board - Z-net
  • Echo - Fidonet
  • Lists - different
  • Net - different
