There are many possibilities files to distribute over Internet. These file sharing services differ partially substantially in the system standing behind it.

The first P2P-Generation: Server Client

The first file sharing programs marked themselves by inquiries to a server, which held either the data ready to the Download, or at appropriate other Peers and so-called Nodes further-obtained, so that one could load there. Best example was Napster (today an Payment offerer) or eDonkey2000 in the server version (today likewise decentralized with the Overnet and KAD network). In addition, beside these programs frequently Internet services for file sharing used, which were not at all for it meant originally, like for example E-Mail or also Instant Messaging.

P2P-Filesharing over server Client minutes

  • Audiogalaxy - since in the middle of 2002 closed
  • Direct Connect
  • Napster - one of the first exchange stock exchanges, meanwhile liable to pay the costs music service
  • Soulseek
  • WinMX - since September 2005 closed

The second P2P-Generation: Decentralized

The server-based systems were simple to program, but this server was also simultaneous the wound point of the whole system. It had to bear not only the whole Traffic, but paralyzed in case of a loss equal the whole system. Therefore soon systems develops no central server more needed. In a decentralized network one can connect to neighbours. Over all neighbours away search results are started and found sources for the Download. The best examples are Gnutella, KaZaA or eMule with Kademlia, whereby KaZaA has still a central log in server.

eDonkey2000/Overnet, Gnutella and nearly TRACKs have summed up approx. 9.3 million user (conditions: March 2006; Source: slyck.com). One cannot measure BitTorrent directly - it is to have however more user than eDonkey2000, why straight this data traffic is tried to obstruct as the first from Providern to.

The third P2P-Generation: Non Direct and codes

Beside the decentralized P2P-Systemen there are also still such, which code and over detours to their goal lead all transferred data. It functions after the sample: Petra gives Paul at olive, olive at Anna the file at Paul. Petra and Anna thus never become acquainted with themselves and are protected. Often also virtual ID addresses are used, in place of IP addresses. Additionally all transfers are coded still, so that even the network administrator of the Internet cannot see Providers and DSL of offerer, what whom were on sent. Best examples are Waste, JetiANts, gate and I2P. This group differs also strongly among themselves.

Waste network

  • WASTE
  • kDrive similarly as WASTE

Ants network

  • ANts P2P
  • JetiANts
  • Hornetp2p
  • ipants.tk

Network

  • i2Phex - Gnutella over I2P
  • Azureus - with I2P plugin

Other networks or Clients

  • Entropy

  • GNUnet
  • Nodezilla
  • Share - successors of WinNY
  • Gate
  • WinNY - development November 2003 adjusted
  • Zultrax - Client, supported networks: ZEPP and Gnutella

The fourth P2P-Generation: Streams over P2P

Apart from the traditional file sharing there is also service instead of files the Streams over a P2P-Netzwerk sends away. Thus one can hear and watch television radio, without the Stream of a server comes, but over a P2P-Netzwerk is distributed. With the fact it is important that it takes place not over a tree structure, but over a Swarming technology, which admits from Bittorrent is. Best examples are Peercast, Cybersky and demo TV.

Generally

  • Broadcatching
  • Podcasting

Tree structure

  • Peercast
  • CoolStreaming

Swarm structure such as Bittorrent

  • OMN
  • Kedora

Television Streams
