The Extranet is an extension of the Intranets around a component, which connects two or several Intranets by a general Internet binding. The Extranet uses the same techniques as Internet (among other things TCP/IP, UDP).

Erroneously the Extranet is consulted also frequently as term for the supply of a user-limited range of a Web offer. Thus it is said that this range can be used only by a fixed group of users. Extranets in this connection are to be after this view supplies of information, make accessible those by e.g. enterprises, customers or partners (see also E-Businesses). This is however only a very much limited and inaccurate view, there it itself to the exclusive access over the application layer (HTTP, ftp,"…) of the OSI model limited.

In the reality a Extranet can use complete functionality at least starting from the switching layer. This form of the put on connections one calls also Tunnelung and is also a form of a VPN (Virtual private network).

For the safety device of such connections/should different coding methods can be used. (See also for this: Network security)
