Exim is a program for dispatching E-Mail, a so-called Mail transfer agent (MTA).

Exim is compatible to at least under Unix most well-known MTA Sendmail. Its special strength lies in a very flexible however nevertheless simple configuration.

It was developed at the university from Cambridge von Philip Hazel. The program is freely available under the GPL.

Exim can query data from different external data sources, under it:

• MySQL
• PostgreSQL
• Oracle
• LDAP
• CDB
• all usual Unix data bases (GDBM, DBM, TDB)

Exim permits the storage of detailed enamels in the formats:

• Maildir
• Mbox
• Mailstore

and naturally also the feed over:

• Pipes
• LMTP
• Smtp

Further Exim has inserted Regular of express ion (PCRE) and a simple, but very powerful script language. Exim permits it in addition to merge a Perl interpreter whereby own Perl Skripte can be used, then e.g. Tying up at other data bases make possible or special examinations accomplish.

At present current version 4 was completely revised and made possible by a ACL system a very exact and flexible configuration for the Spam defense. In addition different Plugins makes an examination possible of contents of the enamels to computer viruses, UBE and unwanted files.
