Epiphany is a free Webbrowser for the GNOME Desktop. It is based on Gecko, which is Rendering engine of Mozilla and under the GNU GPL published. Since GNOMES 2,4 (September 2003) is Epiphany the official Webbrowser of the gnome development project.
Epiphany originally developed as splitting off of the Galeon project. A goal of the developers is it to create a Browser with as simple a user surface as possible which to the human interface Guidelines (HIG) of the gnome development project adheres, into which GNOME Desktopumgebung is integrated and which obeys relevant standards.
Just like Galeon and most other Browser which are based on Gecko, Epiphany Tabbed Browsing, Cookie administration supports and has a Pop UP blocker.
The concept of the Smart Bookmarks was taken over in addition by Galeon. Smart Bookmarks are bookmarks, which integrate an argument from a text field and/or from the address border gotten and these into the called URL. Thus the user can use for example the search function of a Website, without having to load it before.
The probably most remarkable characteristic of Epiphany, is the organization of the bookmarks (bookmarks). Contrary to most other Browsern, which arrange bookmarks on hierarchies, bookmarks in Epiphany topics (topics) are assigned. As many as desired topics can be assigned to the bookmark. Indicated during the input in the address line then both the bookmarks, whose title or URL begins with the entered letters, and the bookmarks their assigned topics with the input to begin.
Similarly as Firefox Epiphany supports extensions (extensions), with which for example a control with gestures of mouse is made possible. A list of available extensions is on the Epiphany web page: .
The differences and the not completely frictionless history of both Browserprojekte are stated in detail on the Galeon web page.
Since 22 October 2005 became decided to develop further Galeon no longer to transfer but its characteristics as extensions to Epiphany.
