When the E-Mail address designated Envelope transmitter, during a smtp handshake after RFC the 2821 as parameters of MAIL FROM: one hands over.
The designation Envelope (English: Envelope, covering) is selected following the envelope. As is the case for the letter post only what stands on the Umschag, is decisive for transport. The Envelope transmitter corresponds to the sender, who Envelope ton informed with the letter post the sender on the envelope (Envelope transmitter), if its message were not deliverable - independently of which sender in the message (Body ton: Header is called). Nondelivery messages (Mailer Daemons) are sent away with empty Envelope transmitter (<>), in order to prevent Mail loops.
If the E-Mail in the mbox format is stored, the Envelope transmitter is contained in the first line of the E-Mail.
For example a Mail with the following smtp commands is dispatched:
MAIL FROM: <ABSENDER@EXAM.PLE> RCPT TON: <empfaenger@beisp.iel>
produces the following line before the header of the received E-Mail:
From absender@exam.ple Wed June 22 13:49: 30 2005
The Envelope transmitter is not indicated to programs by E-Mail normally, can however by special functions (e.g. show headers, show raw," ) to be made visible.
