Elm ("“electronics Mailer"”) is a console-based E-Mail program for UNIX.Es by Dave Taylor of the company intuitive one of system in Mountain View, California, starting from 1986 was programmed. The development was resumed later under the direction of Bill Pemberton by the University OF Virginia.

The development of Elm was motivated by the fact that at this time available E-Mail programs under Unix worked only line orientated and offered therefore no comfortable user surface. Elm was there as Full screen program after standard at that time a genuine progress regarding user friendliness and interactivity.

Since about 1995 were exceeded Elm by other E-Mail programs in functionality and quality and can applying than outdated.
