Electronic publications one calls publications in the form of electronic media, e.g. computer games, digital reference books and on-line publications.

As common characteristic of electronic publications it can be stated that for their use a computer is needed. Other publication forms such as films (DVD) and music (CDs, digital radio"…), usually directly electronic publications are not called, if the linkage of different medium forms (Multimedia) is not an integral component.

Electronic publications become either on a physical data medium (disk, CD-ROM, DVD"…) or as over Internet available on-line publication drove out. Also combinations, with which additional contents and use forms over Internet are offered, occur.

Contrary to conventional printed media electronic publications among other things usually exhibit a medium-specific increase in value in the form of search possibility, interactivity, Multimedia, hypertext and copyableness. Since the production of electronic publications can be very expensive and their Rezeption is bound to readers, they could themselves intersperse (for example as e-Books) so far only within certain ranges. Also the possibility of simple copying ("“pirat copy"”) of digital information is for publishing houses a problem.

The long-term preservation of electronic publication is due to the fast development and evaporability of storage media and software a large problem. Available theses make a beginning in electronic form, for which in the context of the DFG project DissOnline strategies were developed and which are registered starting from 1998 in the German Nationalbibliografie.

Several other national libraries and other mechanisms to experiment-to time with automatic "“Harvesting"” - procedures for archiving of Ausschnittendes Internets, special of the World Wide Web. Internet is most well-known archives. Such a collection can exist however in each case out snapshots without further development.
