Ekiga, formerly GnomeMeeting, is a free program for VoIP Telefonie and participation in a video conference over IP for Linux.
GnomeMeeting on 25 December 2000 of Damien sand-race initiiert.GnomeMeeting was based on the OpenH323-Bibiliothek and uses the H.323-Protokoll for signaling. With this ability other H.323-Clients (how e.g. Microsoft NetMeeting) could be selected either directly (over the IP address) or by means of so-called Gatekeeper than switching center to be reached.
For the version 2.0 the name was converted from Gnomemeeting into Ekiga. This happened, in order to stand out against the quasi given up Netmeeting, since the development away from a video conference program turned more toward a multi-functional VoIP program. There the program since then also session Initiation Protocol (SIP), liked for the VoIP Telefonie, had, the thing in common with the former model Netmeeting is only small.
