ECMAScript for XML (E4X) brings native XML support for ECMAScript conformal programming languages (e.g. Javascript). The goal is it, an alternative, to offer simpler syntax for working on from XML documents to than the well-known cathedral interface.

E4X is standardized by ECMA international in the ECMA-357 standard (at present in the first version of June 2004).

Implementations

E4X is partial in SpiderMonkey, the Gecko Javascript engine, as well as in Rhino implements.

The Browser Mozilla Firefox which is based on Gecko supports E4X since the first versions of Firefox 1,5, however not in at present still wide-spread version 1.0.x. the use of E4X into Gecko based Browsern avowedly (English).

Macromedias coming Scriptsprache ActionScript 3 will completely support E4X (Programming ActionScript 3: Working with XML, English).
