A E-text is a text and/or a document, which is present in electronic form. As it is considered to store the E-texts in an platform-independent format such as SGML and/or XML and to-reads the texts in standardized formats such as HTML to offer XHTML or pdf; there is the possibility the texts to represent also by Stylesheets (CSS or XSL). The core image format of the texts should be also accessible, since only this permits an efficient or processing.

To provide one knows E-texts with an editor, a text processing software, or with a scanner or a digital camera and a text recognition program (ocr software). Depending upon kind of the text often a combination of these media comes to some projects is content of collecting main-offering only in-scanned sides of book or another (images), continues other projects and to produce digital E-texts in the closer sense, which one calls also full texts.

E-texts in the net

In the net there are many free texts, e.g. with the Project good mountain, in electronic form with the project rune mountain (nordische texts), Perseus digitally LIBRARY (Greek and latin of texts), with from the initiated "“Arno Schmidt reference library"” and with so-called document servers. Document servers are operated for example by some German university libraries.
